Highfields, Australia

Client: Toowoomba Regional Council

AU$ 1.2m

Completed 2004

Project Description:

The Sports Centre is an integral part of the Highfields Cultural, Aquatic and Sports Precinct at Highfields. It is in the centre of a rapidly expanding urban area 15kms north of Toowoomba in the Crows’ Nest Shire. The Sports Centre was partially funded by Queensland Sport & Recreation and the local Council.

The indoor sports hall is designed to accommodate two international netball courts in a multi-marked court arrangement, which also allow for basketball, badminton, futsal, indoor cricket and gymnasium activities.

The complex has a large foyer/kiosk area which is designed to service both the sports and swimming communities. The existing change room and toilet facilities of the Aquatic Centre are utilised by the Sports Centre.

The building was constructed using coloured concrete tilt-up wall construction to approximately 5m high with a combination of polycarb and custom-orb wall sheeting. The portal columns are located on the outside of the walls which allow for a safer environment internally. These columns form part of the feature buttressing of the façade which is finished in contrasting coloured concrete.
