This project is the second stage of a regional community centre which was to include a swimming pool, cultural centre, library, professional offices, and indoor sports hall.
The cultural centre has an auditorium that can seat 600 or 350 at tables. A large commercial kitchen and bar are provided along with community meeting rooms of varying sizes. The auditorium, designed to be an intimate theatre for performers and guests, has a large stage and backstage area and mezzanine.
The use of materials is simple with tilt-up concrete, face brick and custom orb sheeting as walls. The street elevation features a checkerboard facade which provides a sense of theatre and folly and has proved to be a great talking point.
This project was undertaken by Lester Ehrlich as the project architect for Thomson Adsett Architects.
